Students Taking Action Towards Empowerment,
STATE, is a comprehensive, youth leadership development program aimed at preventing young people from getting incarcerated or interacting with the criminal justice system. The program serves young people and incorporates legal rights and conflict resolution training, video production, and community advocacy.
- 1. Conflict with Cops Curriculum:
Facilitated in local high schools, this curriculum uses street law and legal rights education to empower youth to better handle difficult situations, particularly ones that may lead to negative interactions with law enforcement or the criminal justice system.
- 2. Executive Internship Program:
High-School interns learn to facilitate the Conflict with Cops Curriculum in their own schools. These sessions allow students to discuss their concerns with peer facilitators in a non-traditional classroom environment.
- 3. Academic Year Program:
High school students work at NDS's office and receive legal rights and youth leadership training through a variety of skill-building activities. Students are then able to teach their peers through facilitating Know Your Rights Workshops and developing a legal rights Public Service Announcement. Participants also engage in a number of activities to advocate for change within the Juvenile Justice System.
- 4. Summer Program:
Participating in many of the activities of the Academic Year Program, students produce a short film to educate other youth about a social or criminal justice issue relevant to teens, while gaining valuable skills in video production and legal rights training.
